The staging will be directed by famed Broadway producer/director Richard Jay-Alexander and SFSO’s acclaimed music-director Maestro Sebrina Maria Alfonso will conduct the 70 piece South Florida Symphony Orchestra with set design by award-winning designer Paul Tate DePoo. The new adaption, featuring an all-star black cast will be presented in three performances: Wednesday, January 16 at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Knight Concert Hall in Miami; Saturday, January 19 at the Tennessee Williams Theater in Key West; and concluding Wednesday, January 23 at the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, with a season gala event in celebration of the SFSO’s 21st anniversary.

Neil Nelson as Porgy and Brandie Sutton as Bess lead an all-star cast that includes Jermaine Smith – Sportin’ Life, Kyaunnee Richardson – Clara, Simone Paulwell – Serena, Eric Heatley – Jake and Gwendolyn Brown as Maria.

In commenting, Stage Director Richard Jay-Alexander stated: “Porgy and Bess is an American treasure. The original Gershwin Heywood all-star black cast of classically trained singers was revolutionary when it debuted in 1935 and has proven to be one of the most groundbreaking and enduring stories of the human condition. I am excited to be working with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra in bringing this incredible new adaption to South Florida.”

In commenting: Maestra Sebrina Maria Alfonso stated: “Since starting the South Florida Symphony in 1997, it was my hope to someday present Porgy and Bess to our community. It is a tour de force and a one of a kind classic that not only crosses musical lines but has broken social barriers. Conducting the Gershwin’s magnificent score with our 70-piece orchestra is truly a dream come true.”

In commenting SFSO President and CEO Jacqueline Lorber stated: “Porgy and Bess is the most highly anticipated feature presentation of our season. We are excited to bring this iconic American opera to our South Florida audiences in three magnificent performances as we celebrate our 21st anniversary.”

It is a rare opportunity to be able to see and hear the American masterpiece Porgy and Bess. It is universally recognized as one of the greatest creative works this country has ever produced. But that opportunity is now a reality, due to the commitment of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra, with an exciting cast and a full 70-piece orchestra, in all their glory, under the masterful baton of Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso.

Porgy and Bess was written by American composer George Gershwin, with a libretto by author DuBose Heyward and lyricist Ira Gershwin. It was adapted from Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward‘s play “Porgy,” an adaptation of DuBose Heyward‘s 1925 novel of the same name.

Porgy and Bess is considered by critics the most important American opera of the 20th century. Gershwin’s masterwork has gained popularity over generations, boasting some of the most beautiful songs ever written, including known classics and standards, such as “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’,” “I Loves You, Porgy,” “Bess, You Is My Woman Now” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”

Like many great American cultural works, Porgy and Bess sprang out of the soil that created jazz, with its unique hymns, rhythms, field calls, blues, revival shouts and spiritual soul. Gershwin worked passionately to create a one-of-a-kind classic, which ended up crossing musical lines, creating something that had never been done before. Whether referred to as an opera, a folk opera or a musical, it is surely a theatrical masterpiece and rarely done because it is such an ambitious undertaking. For that very reason, the well-established symphony reached out to Broadway veteran, Richard Jay-Alexander, to bring it to the stage in a very special way. The entire orchestra and cast will share the stage in what is sure to be an exciting evening’s entertainment, telling an enthralling story, drawing us into the human condition.

The Gershwin-Heyward collaboration originally featured an all-black cast of classically trained singers-revolutionary casting in 1930s America. First performed in 1935, in Boston, at the time it received mixed reviews. Many people couldn’t quite come to terms with its Catfish Row subject matter combined with outstanding vocalists and sophisticated music. As everyone wondered what to label such a revolutionary work, with recitatives and arias, it is still argued today, by scholars, yet beloved and admired by all. Just a few seasons ago, a new revival was reinterpreted and staged on Broadway, by director Diane Paulus, starring Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald. It won a Tony Award for Best Revival. It has proven to be an enduring treasure and tour de force for orchestras and casts alike.

Rising above controversy, Porgy and Bess has broken the barriers of time and social limitations, valued today by what it represents in its essence: a real story “spoken” in beautiful music, that everyone can enjoy, relate to and still learn from.

https://www.broadwayworld.com/miami/article/Richard-Jay-Alexander-To-Direct-South-Florida-Symphonys-PORGY-AND-BESS-20181211 The South Florida Symphony Orchestra has announced three performances of a groundbreaking new production of the Gershwin’s great American opera Porgy and Bess. The title of this composition is based on a phrase in the Theodor Herzl book, Old New Land, which soon became a popular Zionist movement slogan. Herzl, an Austro-Hungarian journalist, playwright, political activist, and writer, formed the Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish immigration to Palestine to
establish a Jewish National Home.
Borenstein wrote If You Will It, It Is No Dream in 2012 in homage to his native Israel for the Philharmonia Orchestra (UK). The world premiere of the composition took place to great acclaim on June 13, 2013 at the Royal Festival Hall under the musical direction of legendary pianist and composer Vladimir Ashkenazy. Maestro Ashkenazy, a champion of Borenstein’s music, later recorded the piece in an album of Borenstein’s orchestral works for Chandos label (2017 release). Borenstein explains:

“… I have used the wind, brass and strings as three contrasting forces in a manner not unlike a piano trio. An example is at the start…: after a short string outburst, the main theme is given to the brass, quickly followed by the wind and then the strings alone. In addition, I use instruments of the winds and brass as solo instruments for their specific timbre, color and tessitura. I am interested in using the complex juxtaposition of rhythms to create a multiple of different atmospheres and enhance the characteristic of each of the components. In the same way that you experience cold more strongly after heat, the slow is more defined following the fast. The piece is full of contrasts: changes of speed, dynamics, texture, length. Sometimes the differences occur at the same time in a personal use of counterpoint that could be described as ‘multimelodic’.” (Multimelodic meaning eternal but ever-changing flow of time.) “One … aspect …is the way a theme or phrase can be sometimes light and optimistic or dark and inescapable, depending on its context. The changes in the orchestration, the accompanying figures of counterpoint or theharmony behind the melody completely alter our perception and is the musical expression of the complexity and ambiguity of our world.”

When asked “What is Jewish about the work?” Borenstein responds “What is Jewish about it is that I am Jewish! If you want great music from great composers like Beethoven …, then you have to let them write as the people they are … If they are Jewish, there will be something Jewish in their work just as there is something German about Beethoven … It’s part of you.”

Borenstein’s compositions are widely performed in prestigious venues and festivals throughout Israel, Europe, Canada, Australia, the Far East, South America, Russia, and the United States. His music receives hugely enthusiastic reviews and appears in the repertoires of many ensembles and orchestras.Borenstein became a Laureat of the Cziffra Foundation in 1984, moved to London in 1986 for violin studies with Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music, and was awarded the highest scholarship from the Leverhulme Trust to study composition with Paul Patterson at the Royal Academy of Music.
Currently an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, Borenstein’s substantial catalogue of over 70 works includes orchestral and chamber music, instrumentals, vocal works, and ballets.

BBC Music Magazine (December 2017) wrote, “The overriding sensation here is of an exuberantly inventive composer with a symphonic instinct exhilarating in the concerto medium.” From Classica (October 2017), “Nimrod Borenstein …possesses a solid craftsmanship but more importantly a true personality. Finally, music full of happiness.” Also on the program Guest Artist, Aldo López-Gavilán makes his stellar Symphony debut. Designated a “formidable virtuoso” by The Times (London), this renowned Cuban pianist and composer excites the senses with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. A child prodigy, he made his Carnegie Hall debut (November 2012) by invitation for the prestigious “Voices de Latino América.” Lauded by The Seattle Times for “dazzling technique and rhythmic fire”, he excels in the classical and jazz worlds as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber-music collaborator, performer of his own electrifying jazz compositions, and recording artist (six albums). López-Gavilán’s distinguished career includes appearances in prestigious concert halls and venues worldwide; collaborations with great classical, popular, and jazz music artists including Maestro Claudio Abbado, Carlos Varela, and the Harlem Quartet; and a United States/Cuban cultural exchange through the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, collaborations in Cuba with renowned US artists Joshua Bell, Usher, Dave, Matthews, and Smokey Robinson.
Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G premiered triumphantly in 1932. Its three movements treat the audience to Basque folk dances, a romantic night in a Spanish garden, a Satie waltz, and a circus of mocking wind instruments. With Debussy, Ravel established a distinctly French school of music and left a legacy of brilliant and witty compositions of kaleidoscopic orchestral color.

Completing the program is the Hector Berlioz spectacular Symphonie Fantastique, an epic played by the full orchestra telling the autobiographical story of the artist’s self-destructive passion for a beautiful woman. Its five movements redefined the symphony genre and ushered in the Romantic Era with its extraordinary innovation in using the orchestra to produce sounds never heard before. Even today, 188 years later, the power, originality, and radical edge of this landmark work set our spines tingling.

SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE 2018 TOUR
Sunday, April 15: 7:30 pm, Boca Raton | Spanish River Worship Center. $30-70.
SouthFloridaSymphony.org.
Tuesday, April 17: 7:30 pm, Fort Lauderdale | Broward Center for the Performing Arts|Amaturo
Theater. $35-$85. Portrayed as “… a phenomenon” by The Strad, this Canadian-born violinist returns to the Symphony as an
audience favorite. The Los Angeles Times praises: “Lara St. John happens to be a volcanic violinist with a huge, fabulous tone that pours out of her like molten lava.” St. John started her violin career at age two, and first appeared as soloist with orchestra at four, made her European debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra at 10, and toured Spain, France, Portugal and Hungary at 12 and 13. St. John entered the Curtis Institute at 13. Teachers included Felix Galimir and Joey Corps. St. John founded her own label Ancalagon in 1999. In 2007, Bach: The Six Sonatas & Partitas for Violin was the bestselling double album on iTunes. In 2009, American Record Guide said of her Vivaldi / Piazzolla disc with Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra: “I can imagine no suaver, more atmospheric performance.” In 2011, St. John won the Juno Award for her Mozart album. Soloist performances include orchestras of Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Hamburg (NDR), Brazil, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kyoto, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Auckland; Boston Pops; Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; China Philharmonic; Zurich Chamber Orchestra; and Camerata Ireland. Recitals in major halls: New York; Boston; San Francisco; Ravina;
Wolf Trap (Washington, D.C.); Prague; Berlin; Toronto; Montreal; and the Forbidden City. St. John’s ex Gingold Stradivarius violin exudes auditory splendor.

The Four Seasons, arguably Antonio Vivaldi’s most popular work, includes four programmatic violin concerti each giving Musical Expression to a Season. The
uninhibited and remarkably original manner of expression identify seasonal characteristics: Spring – bird songs, thunder, a shepherd’s dance, and falling rain; Summer – heat, insects, and a violent storm; Fall – a hunt; and Winter chattering teeth, stamping feet, shelter by the fire, and a howling windstorm.

The concert also includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s picturesque Symphonie No. 6 “Pastoral”, a pure expression of his love of nature and the Viennese countryside. It tells the story of a day in the country replete with peasant dancing, bird calls, and an explosive storm. The “extra-musical” purpose of this Symphony and the Four Seasons concerti, both Expressions of Nature, together inspired this concert’s title.

Furthering its celebration of contemporary American composers, the Symphony introduces Lisa Nardi’s score In This Heart from the film “Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power”. This expressive work of deep emotions is an elegy for string orchestra beginning quietly and solemnly unfolding gradually as each phrase moves through the echoes of loss to crescendos and dissonances depicting unbearable pain before winding down in quiet resignation. The piece is dedicated to those Nardi loved dearly whose departures have left her heart broken.

BEETHOVEN AND VIVALDI’S EXPRESSIONS OF NATURE TOUR:

Wednesday, February 28 at 7:30 pm, Key West | Tennessee Williams Theatre. $25-85.
Keystix.com; 305-295- 7676.

Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 pm, Fort Lauderdale | Broward Center for the Performing
Arts– Amaturo Theater. $35-85.
